First Freedom is an original musical dramatizing the fight for religious liberty in early America. Set in Virginia during the American Revolution, it follows James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and George Mason as they clash over how — and whether — to guarantee freedom of conscience for the new nation.

The story centers on the passage of Jefferson's Virginia Statute for Establishing Religious Freedom, facilitated by Madison in 1786. It was the first legislative act in recorded history to separate church from state and guarantee individual religious liberty.

Style comparisons the show draws: "Les Misérables" and "1776," sweeping, character-driven musical drama built on real historical stakes, not just costume drama.

Is dinner included in my ticket?

Yes — your $50 ticket covers dinner and the show.

Is the show appropriate for kids?

Yes . Although First Freedom has an intended audience of older youth and adults, it is written for guests of all ages.

What time should we arrive?

Doors open at 6 PM; we recommend arriving no more than 10 minutes early. You will be seated for dinner at 6.

Are there Sunday performances?

No — the show runs Monday through Saturday.

Where do I park?

The courthouse parking lot will be reserved for guests. There is also on-street parking and nearby parking lots which will be available. Please do NOT park at Angelica's.

Can I request dietary accommodations?

To keep costs low we do not have variable food choices. That being said, we will make every effort to be as accommodating as possible. Check here again around September 1 to see the menu offerings.
